2001 L. Pira, Barolo, Vigna Rionda, Piemonte, Italy

(Re-tasted the day after) Having the two wines (2000 and 2001 vintage) side by I had a golden opportunity to seek out the difference in this highly disputed vintage duel. Both very nice glasses of wines, so where is the fuss?. The 2001 however posses a higher level of purity and mineral surplus. The wine is deadly young still and gives spices, earth and truffles and again very backward. They are both complex glasses of wines and possess great depth, but the 2001 is not as smoked as the ’00 – neither in nose or taste, but the nerve is higher and it comes from the minerals. (93-96)

Tasted 14th of October 2005 : “Find Beaucastel” Glass: Riedel Sommelier Bordeaux Grand Cru
